The Mother of God has raised her hands in prayer. Before her breast, Christ Emmanuel appears within a medallion. He is making a blessing gesture with one hand and holding a closed scroll in his other hand. The icon of the Mother of God of the Sign is also called Mother of God of Novgorod, because of her role as protector of the city of Novgorod. 

The icon is painted against an olive green background in a refined style, typical for the first half of the 17th century.
