St Maxim Grek was a learned monk at the Vatopedi monastery on Mount Athos. In the year 1516 he was invited by the Moscow Great Prince Basil III (1505-1533) to come to Russia and translate Greek manuscripts into Russian. After some years St Maxim was criticised for his eccleciastical and political activities in Russia, and was imprisoned after being accused of heresy. He spent his last years at the Trinity-Sergiev monastery near Moscow, where he died and was buried in 1556.
