The icon is painted in a highly refined and individual style. In the centre, Christ is descending into Hades, crushing the gates of hell with both feet. Surrounded by saints from the old testament, Christ raises Adam from the grave with his right hand. In his other hand He holds a closed scroll. In the upper left corner, the Crucifixion is shown, and in the upper right corner Christ is rising from the grave while a group of Romans soldiers lays asleep. On the upper border of the icon, the New Testament Trinity is depicted, together with the Mother of God and St John the Forerunner. The female saint on the left border represents St Mary of Egypt.
The beautifully produced silver gilt oklad is chased in high relief and follows the painting underneath in detail.
