Leading up to the upcoming exhibition ‘The Myth Palekh, Icons and Lacquer Miniatures’, running from 12 December 2010 until 6 February 2011 at the Kunsthalle Recklinghausen in Germany, The Icon Museum has purchased a rare Palekh icon from art dealer Jan Morsink Ikonen in Amsterdam.
The icon, painted in a highly refined style, shows the Crucifixion in the centre, surrounded by several special scenes, and dates from circa 1800. The icon will be one of the highlights of the Palekh exhibition, which will show some 300 pieces, including a large number of loans from museums and private collections in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, Italy and the Netherlands. |
